It is extremely easy to compare this title to any other generic shooter and that is because it is. While having destruction is a huge plus the game fails on fun. The game has plenty of features even for a small studio like Atomic Games but it is unpolished and could have used a bit more time being developed.
In this multiplayer only title you play as a single faction the CIAs Special Activites Division. There are a decent amount of weapons available and some cool gadgets like the IR Sniper Detector, which reflects a light of the enemy’s scope and a Sticky Bomb.
There are five maps in the game one taking place on a road, inside a tunnel and in a hidden village and another in the mountains. The buildings are made of stone and wood, which brings for cool destruction effects with lots of particles, further increased with PhysX on the PC.
An equal amount of game types is available, the regular TDM. A conquest/domination like game type called Infiltration. In Convoy you have to escort a convoy through a particular route while withstanding attacks from the enemy team, the vehicles have mounted guns for extra firepower. The game type really only works on one map it is annoying and unbalanced on the rest. Retrieval is a different kind of game type, where the two teams have to fight for a Bioweapon canister located at a random place on the map and retrieve it to their base. The last game type being Sole Survivor a “one life a round” game type like SnD but without the bomb.
As you can read the game has plenty of gadgets and destruction but that doesn’t make up for the low number of maps, the terrible polish and generic gameplay. Ranking is utterly slow and takes away any small wish to try to progress in the game.
Server browser is very basic, you can filter Hardcore, dedicated, secure, map, gametype etc. But dedicated servers appears to show as P2P thus the filter does not work, I had major issues connecting to any servers once I was lucky a map change takes forever and an alt+tab freezes the game.
While the destruction is advanced, the rest of the game looks dated the textures are of very low quality, the animations are laggy and it overall looks like a budget release that should have appeared on the market two years ago. The same goes for the sound design, all the guns sounds muffled and of low volume compared to other sounds in the game, the explosion offers no real “feel” of the event happening.
PC features: The PC version offers dedicated servers, a server browser and extra PhysX support.
Conclusion: What a terrible game, I wonder how even after several delays Atomic Games still didn’t manage to get it to a higher level of polish. The only thing that gave it a 2 was the destruction, is it worth the $15? No definitely not I would rather go and buy Monday Night Combat or similar priced title.
