With the holiday season over, the NPD Group has released their monthly numbers for video game sales. All consoles saw an increase in hardware sales, with Nintendo and Sony reaching record breaking numbers for December. Much like anyone would assume after the holiday season, Nintendo still holds the crown. Both the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS saw over three million in sales. In the race between the "core gamer" consoles, the PlayStation 3 just edged out the Xbox 360 by 50,000 units sold. The PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 2 rounded up the rest of the consoles.
Not only did Nintendo blow away everyone in the hardware sales, they also killed in software sales. They occupied six out of the top ten slots of the top selling games for December. Even more surprising, titles like Mario Kart Wii, which released in 2008, and Wii Play, which released in 2007, made their way onto the list. Other games that gave Nintendo a run for their money were Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2.
