Sony sure covered a lot of ground today during their keynote speech for the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Most importantly, we gamers learned a great deal about how we'll be using our PlayStation 3s in the near future.
For starters, we learned that our PlayStation Network IDs won't just be good for our PS3s anymore. Sony announced today it will soon make its premium video service available to several Sony multimedia devices via PSN. Beginning next month, devices such as Sony Bravia TVs, Sony Blu-Ray players and Windows-based PCs will have this service available. Your Sony PSN ID can be used on these devices the same as it can be used on your PS3 or PSP, and all the devices can be linked by the same account.
Speaking of Bravia TVs, Sony annonced they would release a HD model later this year with full 3D integration, perfect for watching 3D Blu-Rays and, dare I say it, 3D video games? And of course, you'll be able to play these games on your PlayStation 3s, as Sony will release a firmware update later in the year to include 3D Blu-Ray and 3D video game compatibility for ALL PS3 models. Furthermore, in their quest to become the "undisputed global leader in 3D", Sony announced partnerships with IMAX, the Discovery Channel and ESPN to bring 3D-only TV channels into your homes. Oh, the possibilities! IGN got a sneak peak at some of these 3D games -- such as Avatar, Super Stardust HD and Gran Turismo -- with their impressions posted online.
Lastly, Sony announced the sales of PS3 systems over the 5-week holiday period, which were, to say the least, awfully darn good. From late November to the beginning of the New Year, Sony announced estimated sales of 3.8 million PS3s. No doubt some of you contributed to that figure (like GamersVerse el presidente Freakboy). In total, the sales figures were a 76% boost from the same totals one year ago over the same holiday period.
We'll post a video of the Sony keynote conference as soon as it makes its way online.
